An estimated two billion people worldwide suffer from iron deficiency. In Europe, this affects around 5-10 percent of the population, and in young women it affects around one in five. Despite its prevalence, the deficiency is often only recognized and treated at a late stage.
Iron is crucial for oxygen transport in the blood, energy production, muscle function, the immune system and cognitive performance. A deficiency often initially manifests itself through unspecific symptoms such as tiredness, loss of performance or poor concentration. Typical signs such as pallor, palpitations or shortness of breath usually only appear later.
Common causes are regular blood loss (e.g. menstruation), an increased need during growth, pregnancy, breastfeeding or intensive sport, as well as disorders of iron absorption in the intestine. Diagnosis is based on laboratory values such as ferritin, serum iron, transferrin and hemoglobin.
Treatment includes an iron-rich diet, and iron supplements are also necessary. A small study of 20 women suffering from iron deficiency investigated the herbal preparation Eisen Vida. After taking it for twelve weeks, ferritin levels rose by an average of 40 percent, with 78 percent of the participants showing a significant increase. This shows that herbal supplements can effectively support iron stores.
Iron Vida is very well tolerated: I have no stomach complaints or other side effects with the iron capsules. With 1 capsule my ferritin level remains stable, with 2 it even rises slowly. I used to need regular iron infusions and other iron supplements caused massive stomach problems.
