Omega-3 Vegan – vegan omega-3 oil from microalgae and Ahiflower
Are you looking for a high-quality vegan omega-3 oil? Then you get with Omega-3 Vegan a good alternative to our two Omega-3 products, which contain fish or krill oil. Our vegan omega-3 oil contains abundant omega-3 fatty acids from the microalgae Schizochytrium sp. and from Ahiflower oil. Omega-3 Vegan has a pleasant refreshing taste due to a natural orange flavor (therefore no algae flavor).
The omega-3 fatty acids EPA, DHA and ALA
Omega-3 fatty acids are unsaturated fatty acids that are essential for the human body, i.e. they cannot be produced by the body itself. Omega-3 fatty acids, especially the two most important omega-3 fatty acids for the human body docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), are found in large quantities in fatty sea fish and krill. However, these are not suitable for people with a vegan lifestyle or with existing allergies to marine animals, etc.
Those who want to supply their body with vegan omega-3 fatty acids can use, for example, omega-3-containing vegetable oils such as linseed, rapeseed, soybean and walnut oil. These contain alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) in particular. From this, the body can produce the two important omega-3 fatty acids docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). However, ALA must first be broken down into the fatty acid stearidonic acid (SDA) in order to produce EPA and DHA from it in turn.
Microalgae Schizochytrium sp.
Algae are a more ideal, but for us Europeans rather unfamiliar, plant source of omega-3 fatty acids. The marine microalgae Schizochytrium sp. is particularly suitable for this purpose, as it also produces the two fatty acids EPA and especially DHA. Microalgae are tiny (only visible under a microscope) plant-like organisms consisting of only one or a few cells. Schizochytrium sp. is found in coastal marine areas. It does not require light and feeds on organic and plant matter.
Our microalgae oil is a high quality refined oil obtained from Schizochytrium sp. by a physical extraction technology, without using organic solvents.
Ahiflower / Field Gromwell
The inconspicuous plant called Field Gromwell (Buglossoides arvensis) also grows in our latitudes and its name immediately reveals its preferred location. Its seeds in particular have recently come into focus because they contain various omega-3 fatty acids. Among other things, they are rich in stearidonic acid (SDA). Our body can convert these into EPA and DHA. Thus, the oil from the field gromwell helps the body to obtain the important omega-3 fatty acids. The plant further contains alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) and gamma-linolenic acid (GLA). We use a special breed named Ahiflower which are compositionally unique from wild buglossoides/field gromwell seeds. Our Ahiflower oil is derived from the seeds of non-GMO plants (GMO-free).
Studies on the conversion of SDA to EPA
A randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled human study found that oil from the seeds of the field gromwell seed is three to four times better converted to EPA than flaxseed oil. Field gromwell seed contains 18-20% SDA, which is the highest known level of naturally occurring SDA of any vegetable oil.
What else is contained in Omega-3 Vegan?
- Vitamin E as an antioxidant: Omega-3 Vegan contains a natural, high tocopherol extract (vitamin E). This serves as a natural antioxidant.
- Lecithin for better bioavailability: Omega-3 Vegan contains a special lecithin (a phospholipid) from sunflower oil. This acts as a natural emulsifier and allows fat and water to mix (see pictures below).

Special formulation against regurgitation
We have developed a special formula so that the oil is not upset by the stomach and therefore better tolerated even by children. Algae oil can cause unpleasant regurgitation or discomfort in certain consumers. For Omega-3 Vegan, we have therefore developed a special formulation that is ideal for this group of people. The oil is much better tolerated and also more easily digested due to the liposomal processing (see above). This allows the omega-3 oil to mix with the aqueous gastric environment and supports the tolerance and absorption of the oil. Thus, the oil also does not upset.
Good for the brain, eyes and heart
Omega-3 Vegan has a high content of omega-3 fatty acids. These have the following functions, among others:
- EPA and DHA contribute to normal heart function (from 250 mg EPA and DHA daily).
- DHA contributes to the maintenance of normal brain function (from daily 250 mg DHA).
- DHA contributes to the maintenance of normal vision (from 250 mg DHA daily).
- DHA and EPA contribute to normal blood pressure (from 3 g DHA and EPA daily. Do not take more than 5 g DHA and EPA per day).
If pregnant or breastfeeding women take DHA, it contributes to the normal development of the eyes and brain in the fetus or breastfed infant. Condition: The mother must take 250 mg of DHA and EPA daily and an additional 200 mg of DHA, but should not take more than a maximum of 450 mg of DHA and EPA.

Information on the purity of Omega-3 Vegan
Toxin-free: Omega-3 Vegan is regularly monitored for harmful heavy metals such as arsenic, cadmium, mercury, and lead, as well as potential toxins such as benzo[a]pyrene, PCBs, and dioxin-like substances. The containers used for the product are selected and intended for food of this type.
The product can be stored in its original unopened packaging at ambient temperature for 18 months from the date of manufacture. We recommend keeping the bottle refrigerated after opening. During refrigerated storage, the oil may experience crystallization or sedimentation due to its natural origin. This does not affect the product quality. Optimally, the oil should be used within 6 weeks of first opening.
Excellent TOTOX value
The TOTOX value is a measure of the oxidation value of an oil. The higher the value, the more rancid the oil, the lower the value, the fresher the oil. According to international organizations, the TOTOX value for an omega-3 oil should not exceed 26 (read more in this encyclopedia article).
