Fish oil, also called tran, is obtained from fatty tissue of marine mammals. It belongs to the group of triglycerides. As a dietary supplement, it consists of 30 to 35% omega3 fatty acids. Fish oil contains docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), which are important substances for the human body. The fish oil used as a dietary supplement is obtained from salmon and anchovies. Omega3 fatty acids belong to the group of unsaturated fatty acids. They are vital for the human body. They can only be absorbed through food as the body cannot produce them itself.

A special blood test measures how much EPA and DHA arrive in the blood. The values can be measured because the fatty acids adhere to the red blood cells. If the omega3 index is between 8 and 11 percent, it is considered optimal.
