Oregano, Thyme and Barberry Extract – Oregano Vida

Oregano Extract

Originally native to the Mediterranean region, this plant species is cultivated and used in warm and temperate areas around the world. Oregano can be found occurring naturally in almost all of Europe. Oregano thrives in warm locations on calcareous ground. It mostly inhabits dry and light forests, such as oak and pine forests or snow heath pine forests. The leaves of the oregano plant contain a great variety of essential oils, tannins and bitter substances with well documented physiological properties and other naturally occurring plant substances such as carvacrol.

We purchase our organic oregano powder from Europe. The powder is then gently processed into a high-quality organic extract using water as the extracting agent. The extract we use is especially tailored to our product, which has a particular characteristic and therefore meets our requirements for a high-quality product. We analyse and process the raw material mass in Switzerland.

Thyme Extract

Thyme is a shrub from the labiate family. The shrub is low in height and bears many lilac flowers in May and June. The thyme bush is also extremely attractive to bees. Thyme comes from the western Mediterranean countries. Thyme is a well-known kitchen herb with a mild, peppery flavour. The Latin name Thymus is supposed to indicate its invigorating and stimulating effect. In ancient Egypt, thyme played a role in embalming and the Greeks and Romans used it as a seasoning. The Benedictine monks brought the herb to northern Europe and in the Middle Ages, it became a symbol of strength and courage. Herbalists have always attributed thyme with its high-quality essential oils and properties associated with maintaining good health.

We obtain our thyme from the Mediterranean region. It is grown organically and harvested with care. A gentle process is used to extract a concentrate from the dried powder with the aim of preserving and nurturing the valuable natural ingredients.

Barberry extract

Barberry occurs naturally in Europe as well as in the east as far as India. In the Alps, the barberry thrives up to 2500 meters above sea level. Barberry has spread to many regions of the world mostly through cultivation but also through natural propagation. The plant substance Berberine is extracted from the root bark. On the other hand, barberry fruits, which are eaten in dried form in Europe as an alternative to raisins, do not contain berberine. The common Berberis vulgaris as well as the Berberis aristata, which we used in this product, contain berberin in their root bark.

The plants we use for our barberry powder are cultivated with great care and are concentrated by using a gentle extraction process.
