Once encountered by high concentrations of iron, artemisinin becomes unstable and its peroxide is rapidly cleaved into aggressive free radicals, which damage biological macromolecules of the surrounding cells (such as cells of the malaria parasite or cancer cells) within no time.

Additionally it contains 0.75 mg of vitamin B6, 100μg of folic acid (also vitamin B9) and 1.5 μg of vitamin B12.
